Charles Scheland is a New York City-based dance artist and teacher. Charles grew up in Germany, Austria, and the Washington DC area. He graduated summa cum laude from the Ailey/Fordham BFA in Dance program with a double major in Dance and Economics and departmental honours in both.
Charles is currently a dancer with Carolyn Dorfman Dance. He has previously danced for RIOULT Dance NY and Michael Mao Dance. Additionally, he serves as a faculty member at the renowned Ailey School, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Steps on Broadway, and the School at Jacob's Pillow. Charles has also been a guest artist with Buglisi Dance Theater, New England Dance Theater, and Alison Cook-Beatty Dance. His performances have included works by Alvin Ailey, Robert Battle, Bill T. Jones, Juel Lane, Jessica Lang, Milton Myers, Paul Taylor, and other notable choreographers.
Charles studied the Lester Horton Technique with world-acclaimed Horton educators such as Milton Myers and Ana Marie Forsythe. He teaches ballet and Horton Technique and is Milton Myers' assistant and demonstrator at Jacob's Pillow, the Juilliard School, Steps on Broadway, and internationally.
Outside of the dance studio, Charles is the Executive Assistant at Dance ICONS, and he co-hosts and co-produces a podcast with The Nerd Party network called Throwback Paperback.
Charles authentic knowledge of the Horton Technique gained over many years makes his class vibrant, challenging, and fun! His lesson focuses on giving you all the tools for preparing dancers for professional work by using the flawless method to develop strength and stability to work and help students' bodies absorb any choreographer's work.
His positive and nurturing teaching qualities are loved and respected everywhere he teaches.
